Front-Loader Smells and What Actually Fixes Them
By Erik Jacobson, Jackpot Appliance Repair · Updated October 18, 2026
Front-load washers smell because water and soap residue sit in the door gasket and drain pump filter, and mold grows there. Cleaning those two spots and leaving the door open fixes most smells.
Clean the gasket
Pull back the rubber boot and wipe out hair, lint and black residue.
Clean the drain filter
Most front-loaders have a small door at the bottom front. Drain it into a shallow pan and clean the filter.
Prevent it
Use HE detergent and less of it, leave the door and dispenser open after each load, and run a monthly cleaning cycle. Bleach cycles alone don't reach the filter.
