Hollow Ice Cubes Usually Mean Water Pressure
By Erik Jacobson, Jackpot Appliance Repair · Updated October 18, 2026
Hollow or small ice cubes usually mean the ice maker isn't getting enough water, most often from a clogged water filter, a kinked supply line or a weak inlet valve.
Check these first
Replace the water filter if it's over 6 months old, check the line behind the fridge for kinks, and make sure the shutoff valve is fully open.
If that doesn't fix it
The water inlet valve may be weak or partly frozen, or the fill tube may be icing up. That's a repair visit.

Ice buildup in the ice maker compartment is a separate, common issue. We fix the cause, not just melt the ice.
