Repair usually makes sense when the appliance is under about 10 years old and the repair costs less than half the price of a comparable new one. Past that, replacement is often the better buy.

Age

Most washers, dryers and dishwashers last about 10–13 years; refrigerators about 10–15. Las Vegas heat shortens that for garage units.

Part cost

Fans, relays, igniters, belts, pumps and switches are usually worth fixing. Compressors and sealed systems on older units often aren't.
