Why Las Vegas Garages Kill Refrigerators

By Erik Jacobson, Jackpot Appliance Repair · Updated October 18, 2026

A refrigerator in a Las Vegas garage fails early because the compressor and condenser fan run almost nonstop in 110°F+ summer heat. Most fridges are designed for rooms up to about 90–100°F.

What actually wears out

The compressor has to push heat out into air that's already hotter than the coils were designed for. It runs longer, the start relay and condenser fan cycle constantly, and the door gaskets dry out. The usual failures we see are a dead start relay, a seized condenser fan and, eventually, the compressor.

Signs your garage fridge is struggling

The outside feels very hot, the fridge runs constantly, food spoils faster, or you hear clicking every few minutes. That clicking is often the start relay trying and failing to start the compressor.

How to help it last

Keep 3–4 inches of space behind and around it. Vacuum the condenser coils twice a year. Keep it out of direct afternoon sun. Don't overload it, and check the door gaskets. Some models are rated for garages; check the manual before you buy.

Repair or replace?

A start relay or condenser fan is an inexpensive fix. A failed compressor on an older fridge usually isn't worth it. We'll tell you which one you're facing.
